blurry, wide-eyed, and loveless winter
evening darkens all but streetlights and snow
you learn to stay behind lightning you once thought endless
but when the sky began to clear
you found there was no one there to save you
no one to light the path
no one to close it off
no home but the wind, just the wind, that's all
you see a bad moon rising
and tenderly you rest
as you wait for morning to patiently undress

where have you been, my lonesome traveler?
buried in the sight of another's decay
another dying bird who just flew down from Rockford
got away from someone who had boarded up all of her shelter
and said "I never thought that love would be so cruel,
but the more I fly, the more I find that it's true,
and in my memory, I never pledged to try again,
I will keep holding myself up against the wind."

until the storm clears from your eye
I won't lose you from my sight
and when you feel relieved enough to fly
I'll release you to the sky
and in your wing, you'll find a splinter
that I stuck with hesitation
knowing you'd come back for treatment
only I could find the wound
and you'll still wonder my intention
without knowledge of infection
pleased to find I'm only passing through
it's not a terrible secret
every lover knows your weakness
you hit the ground so many times you can't take off
a burden once, but now forgotten
you keep a picture in your locket
so no one else could ever see
until you find a new place to bleed
